S&P 500 rallies late to finish the day and week fractionally higher

Late day surge

This is the kind of move late on a Friday that makes market participants wonder if there’s something coming on the weekend they don’t know about. And the kind of move that makes market reporters weep.

The index was down 25 points at midday but rallied to finish up 2 points to 2708. With the late break the market finished up 0.05% on the week.

All the major markets were largely unchanged on the week, with the Nasdaq leading the way, up 0.47%.
